Description

For many centuries, Lower Silesia has been a region whose rich and complex history was related to its diversified settlement.  The area, first relatively early occupied by Slavonic tribes, was then colonized in the Middle Ages by Germanic settlers who flocked into the increasing number of urban centers developing here on the much frequented trade route which linked the East to the West of Europe.  The land passed from the Slavonic Piast princes to Czech, then to Austrian rule, which caused intensified migrations.
As a result of political shifts and the change of borders by the Potsdam Agreement in 1945, Lower Silesia was populated by about 1.5 million predominantly Polish settlers from the various regions of pre-war Poland: Lwow area, Volhynia, Polessye, Vilnius, Novogrudak.  The new settlers were commonly referred to as "zabuzhanie", i.e. the people from across the river Bug, or "repatriates".  They were mostly villagers of small eastern towns who declared Polish nationality and therefore were forced to leave their homeland which was not part of the Soviet Union.  During the re-settlement action, members of local communities were purposefully dispersed over as wide a territory as possible in order to prevent the reconstitution of pre-war social structures.  Other settlers included those who voluntarily abandoned the overpopulated regions of central and southern Poland devastated by the war.
They were joined in 1946 by Polish emigres from Bosnia and Bukovina, descendants of those Polish emigrants who in the 2nd half of the 19th century had moved from the northern to the southern frontier of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.  The complex picture of Lower Silesia was further complicated by the arrival of Ukrainian and Lemko populations who were foced to move here during the so-called "Action Vistula" as well as the final deportations of German inhabitants by 1947.
The folk songs now performed in Lower Silesia derive from nearly all the reions of pre-war Poland or - in some cases - even from regions which had once formed part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth before the 18th century partitions of the country.  This diversity represents a wealth of the region's traditional culture and is the depositary of the cultural heritage of Poland's pre-war eastern frontier.  For much of the population it is their main cultural heirloom and link to the past.
The material from this album was recorded between 1985-2006 during fieldwork initiated by the Provincial Cultural Center in Jelenia Gora.
