We are thrilled to announce the release of tis new book devoted to one of the most fascinating elements of Polish folk art – spiders. Authored by Katarzyna Kraczoń, this book offers a unique compendium of knowledge about this traditional form of decoration that has long adorned Polish interiors, forming an integral part of festive and ritual folk decorations.
Folk spiders, long a decorative element, especially during the Christmas season, made from a variety of materials – from straw and paper to feathers and thread – still retain their place in Polish tradition. Many of them possess profound symbolism, intended to bring prosperity, health, and protection from evil spirits to the home.
"Spiders" is a book that not only explores the history and symbolism of spiders but also explores their role in the everyday lives of rural communities. The publication includes a rich collection of both archival and contemporary photographs. Also important are the photographs and detailed descriptions of the craftsmanship of individual spider elements, making the publication a valuable resource not only for researchers and ethnographers, but also for enthusiasts of folklore and folk art.
