Description

The history of the Christian Church almost right away from its very inception, has been intertwined with music.  Christmas songs occupy a special place among this music.  They are to be found in all the realm of Christian culture.  In England they are known as carols, in France as Noels, in Germany as Weihnachtslieder, in Romania as kolindy, while in Poland as koleda.  The last two names point to the pagan roots of the Christian tradition, whose antecedents can be traced to the New Year festivities and customs of ancient Rome.  These included visits paid to relatives and friends accompanied by songs expressing the season's wishes and greetings and often referring to the various traditions of what were the January "Kalenda" in the Julian calendar, which marked the beginning of the new year.

The Poznan Philharmonic Boys' and Men's Choir, popularly known as the Poznan Nightingales, has a long and distinguished history of public music making.  Under its founder and moving spirit Stefan Stuligrosz, one of Poland's most eminent choirmasters, the ensemble gives numerous concert at home and abroad.

This CD features 18 songs from various traditions, including the German, Austrian, French, Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Slovenian and Spanish.  Among the composers of carols recorded by the Stuligrosz choir special mention should be made of Henry John Gauntlett (1805-1876), the well known English church musician and author of numerous liturgical hymnbooks, and Franz Xaver Gruber (1787-1863), the Austrian organist and choirmaster whose main credit to fame is Stille Nacht, possibly the most popular of all Christian carols, composed in 1818.
Words to all the music in the original language plus Polish and English translations.
Recorded in 1994 at the Resurectionist's Church at Wilda in Poznan.
