Description

The Bieszczady bison is a timid and elusive animal.  It presents a serious challenge for a photographer, which has been met by an artist who is sensitive to the beauty of the mountains he knows and loves.  A hunter and photographer.  This album is Tadeusz Budzinski's medal trophy, a truly beautiful album.
Bison doubtless lived in the Bieszczady Mountains as early as the Middle Ages.  They were exterminated in the 18th century and returned here again thanks to silviculturalists, which is a great achievement of Polish scientists, ecologists and lovers of those great animals.  In 1963 foresters built an acclimatization pen of 5.68 hectares in the Widelki Sub-Division of the Stuposiany Forest Division. On 30 October of that year the bison "Pulon" and "Pulpit" from Pszczyna and "Pulesna", "Puszczor" and "Pujor" from Niepolomice, joined them.  The bison endured the winter very well and were in perfect physical condition.  They were set free on 4 May 1964, following a six month quarantine.  That was a very important moment for for wildlife protection in our region; after more than 150 years wild bison appeared in the Carpathians again.  They soon reached the higher parts of the Bieszczady in search of a permanent refuge.  In the following years, 11 more individuals were transported here;  all of them born at large.  The first truly Bieszczady-originating calf was born on 10 December 1965.  Each year more calves were born and the herd grew in size.  After several years, dividing into smaller groups, the herd gave rise to the only wild mountainous population of this species in Europe.
