Description

This is the second collection of short stories in English by Walerian Domanski, after “The Dog called Hitler.” In his stories, the author presents the effect of the dilettante Communist government in Poland from the perspective of the common citizens. Both those who naively believed in the bright future promised by Communism and the avowed opponents of the ideology were sentenced to a gray, depressing life, with the never ending task of finding ways to outwit the nonsensical bureaucracy. They were sentenced to a life of poverty, without any hope of improving their fate. In these finely crafted stories, tragic situations collide with humor, satire, dramatic, and even grotesque events. They are written in simple language, without stylistic frills. Humor, satire, and dramatic events. Must read!

About the Author
Walerian Domanski, recipient of a 2015 Kresge Art Fellowship for his short-story collection “A Dog Called Hitler,” was born to Polish parents in Russia in 1943. In 1946 the family returned to Poland, where he received his education and became a Civil Engineer, working for state-owned construction companies. In 1977 he started publishing editorial cartoons critical of the ideology of Communism and joined Union Solidarity in 1980. Imprisoned by the regime in 1981, he came to the USA as a political refugee in 1987. After obtaining a Master’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering from Wayne State in 1994, he worked for the City of Detroit until his retirement in 2008. The International PEN Club included the story “Smoke Factories” in the Fall 2010 issue of its online magazine. His first English-language story collection, “The Dog Called Hitler,” came out in 2014, and was awarded in 2015 by Kresge Foundation. Mr. Domanski received awards from the Detroit Friends of Polish Arts in 2013, 2014, and 2015. He published in 2013 and 2014 two books; “Fabryki dymu” (Smoke factories) and “Klasa robotnicza rzadzi“ (Workers gained power).
