The Culinary Queen - Bona Sforza, the wife of King Zygmunt I, came to Poland from Italy in 1518.  She brought with her many foods which had never been seen in Polish kitchens.  Several vegetables, including celery, leeks and lettuce were first eaten in Po Szlachta was the noble class in Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the two countries that later jointly formed the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The szlachta arose in the late Middle Ages and existed through the 18th century and into the 19th.
