Description

Traditional fabric for Polish costumes. To make a typical skirt will require approximately 3 yards of material. Price is per yard. Fabric sales are final and non-returnable. 20% discount for a whole bolt (approx 50yards).
Question. What is the origin of the name of this type of material? The answer below is from Mr Robert Strybel who lives in Warsaw , better known as the "Polish Answerman". Tybet (the Polish word for the country of Tibet) was originally cloth hand-spun from the wool of Tibetan sheep and was strong, light, soft and provided excellent insulation. It is similar to cashmere (which comes from the wool of Kashmir goats). At present the original Tibetan wool is no longer used in Polish folk costumes (I was told by a folkwear maker they would be too expensive). So, like most everything else these days, less expensive, synthetic substitutes are used. But the name Tybet has remained and is used to describe the above-mentioned folk-skirt material. Hope this helps. Best! Rob
