Detroit area Polonia commemorates the tragic deaths
of the President and First Lady of Poland
and Poland's leaders and dignitaries

 

Hamtramck, MI - The Piast Institute, The Polish National Alliance, Council122 and Our Lady Queen of Apostles Parish will sponsor an area wide memorial and prayer to commemorate the memory of The President of the Republic of Poland, His Excellency Lech Kaczynski, First Lady Maria Kaczynska, members of the Polish Government and Parliament as well as high ranking Dignitaries in a plane crash in Smolensk, Russia on April 10, 2010. 


The ceremony of mourning will begin in Hamtramck’s Zussman Park

(across from City Hall, between Evaline and Yemans Streets)

at 6:00 pm on Tuesday April 13, 2010

followed by a solemn candlelight procession several blocks to

Our Lady, Queen of Apostles Church for a prayer service.

 

             Representatives of major Polish Organizations, Fraternals, Dance Ensembles, choirs, Scouts, and Veterans groups as well as current and former municipal and governmental officials will participate. A representative of the Polish Consul-General in Chicago has been invited. The public is also invited to attend to join in the ceremony and procession to honor the memory of those who died and to show their solidarity with the People and Government of Poland during this time of unprecedented national tragedy. The delegation of Polish leaders and dignitaries were killed en route to mark Seventieth Anniversary of the Katyn Massacre at which over 22,000 of Poland’s best and brightest leaders were murdered by the Soviet Secret Police.

 

            Candles will be provided and limited transportation for those who need assistance between sites at the event will be available. In keeping with Polish Tradition, a space will be provided for those who wish to leave candle, flowers or other memorials at the church. A Memorial Book will be available from Monday morning until the ceremony at the Piast Institute, 11633 Jos. Campau, Hamtramck. It will then be available at the 43 ceremony and the Church. The signatures and sentiments will be forwarded to the Government and People of Poland after the Ceremony.
