Description
A Polish sabre (szabla) is an Eastern European long one-edged melee weapon. It started to be used in Poland in the 15th century thanks to relations with Lithuania, Hungary and war contacts with Turkey, where sabres were very popular. A sabre consists of a blade and a hilt made of a grip and cross-guard quillions. A hilt may be open or closed with a hand guard. A one-edged bladed ended with a two-edged yelmen is responsible for the sabre's attack force. The cut is inflicted with a sharp edge of the blade. Due to Polish tradition and history, a sabre constitutes a particular symbol, which makes it a highly esteemed weapon. This miniature makes a perfect letter opener.
Hussar sabre is a contemporary name for a military sabre which was part of the equipment of Polish heavy cavalry from the middle of the 17th century to the end of the 18th century. It used to be called a black sabre or a curved cutlass. Experts in arms call it the queen of Polish sabres. By the combination of the best sabre designs both from the Orient and Western kingdoms, it became exceptionally functional and effective in combat. Therefore it is considered one of the most perfect cavalry sabres in Europe. Its blade was slightly curved and the adorned hilt was either closed or semi-closed. It also contained a back-strap on the inner surface where a thumb could be placed, which made the weapon even more functional and allowed for fast strikes. Moreover, a double edged prominent yelmen enabled effective thrusts. The hussar sabre is unofficially considered the first standard sabre of the Polish army since despite its evolution and existence of numerous types, it retained permanent features and a similar type of weapon was not used in any other European army of that time.
