Description

Polish paper cut-outs are a very special sort of art.  They appeared for the first time 150 years ago in small villages of Mazovia - close to Warsaw, Otwock and Czersk as a modest way of decorating the timbered ceilings and the walls of rooms.  Later there was a period of vivid development.  They were shifted from the walls of huts to ethnographic museums and displaying galleries.  Nowadays in villages they are present as a part of the Polish culture, consciously kept up by a small group of women, cutting out for exhibitions and competitions, for private collections in Poland and abroad as well as for decorating "rural residences"  --- very trendy nowadays.
In addition to a detailed history of the subject this book is filled with examples of the art created by artists living and deceased.  The book is divided in sections by region and includes maps of each area.  Each example is dated and includes the name of the artist.   Text is in Polish, English and German.
