The Wieliczka salt mine is one of the oldest in the world having opened in the 13th century. The historic Salt Mine in Wieliczka is the only mining site in the world functioning continuously since the Middle Ages. Legend attributes the discovery of salt to the Hungarian Princess Kinga (Kunegunda) on her way to marry the ruler of the city of Krakow, Boleslaus the Chaste.
From the Middle Ages the miners who extracted the "white gold" left behind passages, chambers, chapels and statues which today are a worldwide attraction for tourists. In 1978 the Wieliczka Salt Mine was entered, as one of the first 12 sites from the whole world on the first UNESCO List of Cultural and Natural Heritage.
Salt is believed to be the most popular food seasoning in the kitchen. Its fine white crystals enrich taste of our dishes, and thanks to microelements within, help our bodies to function correctly. It is worth knowing that our salt is produced from natural brine extracted from twenty million year old deposits.
