Description
A Polish sabre (szabla) is an Eastern European long one-edged melee weapon. It started to be used in Poland in the 15th century thanks to relations with Lithuania, Hungary and war contacts with Turkey, where sabres were very popular. A sabre consists of a blade and a hilt made of a grip and cross-guard quillions. A hilt may be open or closed with a hand guard. A one-edged bladed ended with a two-edged yelmen is responsible for the sabre's attack force. The cut is inflicted with a sharp edge of the blade. Due to Polish tradition and history, a sabre constitutes a particular symbol, which makes it a highly esteemed weapon. This miniature makes a perfect letter opener.
Sikorski's sabre belongs to ceremonial sabres which could not be carried with the uniform. Ceremonial sabres were different from the standard ones in their hilts and individual ornamentation. They frequently were gifted to officers of high ranks in the Polish Army. The hilt of Sikorksi's sabre was entirely made of brass and its shape resembled a karabela. The hilt was closed by a hand guard which formed an acute angle with the cross-guard. It reached the pommel that was shaped as the crowned eagle's head. The blade was totally adorned with inscriptions and ornamentations - "Za Honor Ojczyzny" - For The Honor Of The Fatherland, as well as with the Polish crowned eagle. The sabre was a name's day gift from the General's soldiers, thus, the inscription on the outer side of the blade says, "Kochanemu Dowodcy /Jeneralowi - Ppor Wladyslawowi Sikorskiemu/19 17 VI 20r. Dcy 9ej Dywizji Piechoty - Od 22 Pulku Piechoty" - To The Beloved Commander/General, Second Lieutenant Wladyslaw Sikroski, The Commander of the 9th Infantry Division from the 22nd Infantry Regiment/27 June 1920.
