Description

Polkas are dances performed in quick double time, of Polish origin, introduced in the 1830's.  The name comes from the Czech term for "Polish Girl."  This was probably the last link in a long process of transforming peasant dances into social ones.  The polka swept Europe as a ballroom dance.  Since then polkas have crossed many boundaries and many oceans in the last hundred or more years.  The origins of the polka go back several centuries in regional folk dances.  A characteristic of the music is the rest on the second beat, and of the dance, the hop after every three steps.
This album show the polka has never been more vigorous, more full of young ideas and more accessible to anybody who can feel and react to the strong rhythms,  The polka has lasted so long because it is so alive, and has never lost touch with the folk earthiness and full-bodied emotions at its roots - The Polish Polka.
