They are joined by a seal who is worried that over-fishing will leave him hungry, a migratory water bird whose marsh has been drained, and other animals in distress. The boy and his dog welcome each on board the train and eventually back to their home. Burningham successfully addresses the plight of endangered animals within the context of a charming story.
