Description

This year's calendar features the 12 historic public and Catholic schools in Hamtramck throughout the years!  Each school's history is described in detail.  Lots of historic black and white photos.

One of Hamtramck's greatest achievements has been in the field of education.  From a few scattered schools in the old Hamtramck Township, Hamtramck's educational landscape grew to be one of the most progressive in the nation by the 1930's.  Its growth was prompted by the huge immigrant influx that occurred with the opening of the Dodge Main factory in 1910.
Thousand of immigrants flowed into the town to work at Dodge Main.  It was common for families to have six and eight children, most of whom had only received the most rudimentary education - if any at all - in the old country.  Many could not speak English.  Few had ever seen a doctor or dentist, and they brought with them a myriad of physical and psychological problems.
In 1923, new Superintendent, Maurice R. Keyworth recognized the challenge and transformed the Hamtramck schools into a system that became a model for the nation.  He created schools with clinics, and special amenities, like "fresh air" classrooms where children with persistent health problems could heal, and orthopedic pools for children suffering from polio could get therapy.  Medical and eye doctors worked with counselors tor treat their children and bring their parents into the educational process.  In addition, the Hamtramck schools began a wide-reaching adult education which helped educate the parents and integrate them into American society.
The Hamtramck Public School code of 1927, essentially written by Keyworth, was so progressive it drew national and even international attention, serving as a model for school districts across the nation.
