Description

This booklet is designed to help Polish Americans understand and appreciate the extraordinary contributions of Poland and the Polish people, wherever they live, to world culture and history.
Most Polish immigrants who came before 1914 to the US were from rural areas. Living under foreign rule they had little opportunity to learn about their history, culture, contributions to science, arts, learning and technology. It was in America that they heard their first Chopin concert or saw their first Polish play or had the opportunity to study Polish language and history. At the same time they also made a major contribution to the building of America, through the churches, schools, hospitals and communities they built in American cities and towns. Later 20th century immigrants knew more of their history and culture, but were little aware of the achievements of the earlier waves of their fellow Poles still in America. In the 21st century, we, their American descendants feel bonds of family, emotion and pride to American Polonia and Poland and to the people here and in Europe who shaped our heritage but don't fully know their amazing story.
This booklet seeks to distill a few of the extraordinary contributions Poles have made to world culture, to the struggle for liberty, and to the ideas and experiences that are at the heart of free and democratic societies everywhere. In short, this booklet seeks to summarize why we are so very proud to be Polish.
