According to legend an angel looked at the poor land of Kashubia and became very sad. So God allowed him to tip out all that remained in the divine coffer after the creation: lakes and ponds, forest, hills, some sea and some good soil. All this makes up the beauty of Kashubia. Who are the Kashubes? One theory claims that Kashubian is a half-way stage between Polish and the extinct languages of the Ranowie, Obodryci, and Drzewanie tribes. Linguists classify Kashubian as belonging to the Lechitic group of the Slavonic languages. At any rate Poles find it hard to understand the Kashubes. Not only are the words different but also the phonetics are surprisingly archaic perhaps due in part to the relative isolation of the region.
