On December 12, 1918, Major Leon Łada-Zawistowski began forming the Kaunas Rifle Regiment in Zambrów. It was formally established on December 16 as a branch of the Lithuanian-Belarusian Division, and the soldiers were recruited mainly from members of the local Polish Military Organization and Kaunas Self-Defense, who, after the unsuccessful Vilnius Uprising, managed to break through the German cordon into the territory of the Kingdom of Poland.
