The origin of the Lajkonik can be dated back to the 13th century, when the city of Krakow was attacked during the Tatar invasions of Europe. However the people of Krakow were able to successfully repel the Tatar invasion. The Lajkonik has become one of the unofficial symbols of the city of Krakow, Poland. It is represented as a bearded man resembling a Tatar in a characteristic pointed hat, dressed in Mongol attire, with a wooden horse around his waist.
