Description

The 46 recordings on this CD represent two regions of northeastern Poland on whose heterogeneous life the cultures of the neighboring Lithuanians, Belorussians and Ukrainians have long exercised their influence. The Suwalki and Podlasie regions are highly conservative and have largely preserved their tradional culture and music, especially - vocal music. This phenomenom has been related to the position of instrumental music, whose role in this area is less significant than in regions on the other side of the Vistula. In those other parts of Poland the archaic feature of the vocal ballad and ritual repertoire have disappeared under the influence of instrumental music. In Podlasie and around Suwalki, the older vocal style has largely been maintained, especially in the ritual songs. The old vocal style adheres to the age-old tonal patterns (of narrow range, modality and pentachords), as opposed to the instrumental music based on more recent models from the major-minor key system.. The sequence of songs on this CD is primarily meant to illustrate the family and annual cycles of life. Polish - English booklet enclosed detailing the people and music presented as well as the names of the songs in both languages.
