Description

Traditional folk chests were used to store the most precious objects in a peasant's house. Their owners used to keep the dowry, festive costumes, special festive candles, rosaries, family treasures, linen, money and documents. Some of the wealthier brides used to have their dowry stored in two chests.
Such painted chests made their owners particularly proud. The chests were placed opposite the entrance so that every visitor could spot them immediately. The ones which got older and became damaged through the years were later moved to the back of the house, in order to exhibit the newer ones.

This marvellous chest was painted by folk artist Leszek Pliniewicz and features village scenes on the top and front.  On each side are two couples wearing the traditional folk wedding costumes, Krakow and Lowicz.  When the chest arrived we had a master carpenter make two construction improvements.  The first was to reinforce a small section of the interior back where a loose hinge had caused a small wood split.  The second was to replace the small lid hinges with a much sturdier one piece unit.  The result is a masterpiece of old world artistry and modern day construction and a chest that will last for generations.
