What is it about Christmas Music that brings everyone together?  And, who got the brash idea that these familiar, festive songs should be performed on the Button Box?  It's almost too bad that the music associated with Christmas and Winter Time, gets heard for less than one month of the year.  But yet, whenever we hear these songs, we remember the words, and break into song, despite the 11 month hiatus from the previous season.

This collection of Christmas Music started out to be a production that featured the button box on all of the selections.  But then, I realized that there were songs that deserved to be heard and couldn't be performed on the diatonic accordion.  Several songs deserve special attention:  The group of musicians and singers who were assembled in the studio to record "The Twelve Days of Christmas" showcases some of the most well known personalities (illuminaries) in the world of Cleveland Style Polka Music.  "Then You'll Know It's Christmas Day" was found on a piece of sheet music with a 1949 copyright date, but the song was never recorded until now.  "Don't Play Me A Sad Song At Christmas" was written for this production.

It was interesting to hear the Christmas songs from the different nationalities.  If you had never heard these songs before, and no one told you, you would still know that they are songs about Christmas, Jesus, Santa Claus, the Manger and all the other related factors.

Having always been a fan of parody and novelty songs, I was pleased to be introduced to the music of accordionist/comedian Stan Boreson of Washington State.  "I Give Up, What Is It?" and "Walking in my Winter Underwear" were his creations.  The version of Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" heard here combines several otherwise unrelated styles and eras of music into one arrangement.

Festively, Fred Ziwich
