"Polish Religious Songs" is a unique collection, an excellent illustration of the unity between the sacred and the profane in traditional culture.  It also represents the wealth of forms and genre of prayers which accompanied virtually all domestic activities: household duties and farm work - as they were a key ingredient of the everyday life of the villagers.  The collection demonstrates the extraordinary creativity and inventiveness of the anonymous singers, both male and female, who in the distant past  composed songs for all kinds of occasions.  At present, many of those songs survive only in worn out notebooks with yellowed leaves or in the heads of the performers, or even only in the form of tape recordings in the Polish Radio Archive.  This CD is but a small sample of the Polish Radio collection, which itself is rather small in comparison with the immense repository of religious songs systematically collected since the 1970's in the Institute of Musicology, Catholic University of Lublin.
