Mazovia (In Polish Mazowsze) is a vast, lowland region situated in central Poland, its main town centres being Plock, Lowicz, Skierniewice, Rawa Mazowiecka and Warsaw. The subregions of Mazowia differ not only in their music, the instrumental line-up of the ensembles and the types of songs but also in the elements of their dress. The basic features of Mazovia's regional costumes were coloured stripes on women's woolen aprons and skirts and on men's cloth trousers. The colours of these stripes differed from one subregion to the other. As for the music, the main differences are in the tempos and types of dances, among which those in triple time were by far the most popular. The primary source of knowledge about the folk music of Mazovia are five volumes of the forty-volume fundamental work by Oskar Kolberg (1814-1890) "Lud, jego zwyczaje, sposob zycia, mowa, podania, przyslowia, obrzedy, gusla, zabawy, piesni, muzyka i tance" (The People, their customs, way of life, speech, legends, proverbs, rites and superstitions, amusements, songs, music and dances). The vast Polish Radio folk collection accumulated since 1970 contains several thousand recordings of songs and instrumental music from the Mazovia region, where were made at folk music festivals, in the radio studio and in musician's homes. The present CD features a selection of songs, couplets and dances representative of Mazovia's various subregions. Each CD includes a small booklet describing in Polish and English the various bands and their backgrounds. These songs are from the Mazowsze region. They are not performed by the musical ensemble Mazowsze.
