Drawn by the cartographer G. Peltier, this unusual map was first published as a supplement to the French news magazine L'Illustration in 1914 to illustrate the eastern theatre of World War I. It shows the Baltic area - present day Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, northeast Poland (north of Lodz and east of Thorn and Danzig) and Belarus - in extraordinary detail, identifying small towns and villages, railroads, rivers and their tributaries.
