| Other than the standard nesting doll, two types of matryoshki have been produced for many years, though they are still quite unusual: babushki and nevalyashki. The babushka, or grandmother, is not technically a nesting doll. It opens up to reveal five separate smaller non-nested dolls, their daughters, inside. In this case, a hand-painted Christmas tree opens up to reveal a family of smaller dolls. The second unusual type of matryoshki is the nevalyashki, or roly-poly bell, which is also available on the site. |
