The Russian matryoshka (painted wooden dolls nestled into one another) appeared in Russia in the 1890's. The name is derived from the Latin root "mater" which means "mother" and was one of the most common for Russian females. This fine full colored album describes the history of the dolls, the centers of production and many fine examples of past and present artists. The photos are outstanding and feature the best examples of Russian workmanship.
