Wielkopolska ('Greater Poland') is a historical province of Poland stretching in the middle part of the Warta River basin. This is a lowland area with beautiful lakes in the north. In the past, Wielkopolska was inhabited by the tribe of Polanie who under the Piast dynasty established here in the 10th and 11th century, the Polish state, with Gniezno as its capital city. The earliest recordings on this CD come from the 1st Folk Music Festival in Warsaw in 1949 and extend through the 1980's. Folk music from this region highlights the sounds of a very popular instrument whose popularity arose in the Middle Ages, the bagpipe. The selections feature the most distinguished instrumentalists and singers from the region. Bagpipe-players usually come from families with rich musical traditions. Many of them make instruments and teach younger generations of musicians.
The ensemble music-making in Wielkopolska, although still alive, has changed in recent years. Bagpipe bands do not take part in ceremonies or dance events so intensively as before. As in other regions, traditional folk music is more likely to be heard on stage than in its natural milieu. Wielkopolska folk songs are strongly influenced by instrumental tunes. Melodically, they are bound up with the scale, playing technique and musical capacities of the bagpipe. Ceremonial music is represented on this CD by the harvest-home song (ex.4), the song connected with the podkoziolek carnival custom (ex.5) and wedding songs for oczepiny (the ceremony of placing a woman's bonnet on the bride's head, ex.7,8,9). In all these songs the regional dialect is well preserved.
