The hussar cavalryman had two feathered attachments to the back of his armor. This decorative effect came to Poland from the East. Turkish crack light cavalry painted their shields with wings, as did those from Hungary. It’s a very interesting story about a Polish priest in Warsaw who has become world-renowned for his numerous cultivars of the clematis vine, all of which he has named for various aspects of Polish history.
