Description

The 1934 sabre, sometimes called Ludwikowka after Ludwikow Steelworks where it used to be produced, is the last Polish military sabre. The works on its design began in 1925 and lasted to 1935 when the Minister of Military Affairs finally accepted the design from 1934. The blade was 82.5cm long. The grip was made of wooden and crimped linings. The brass quillions were 13cm long and at one side, extended into a hand guard which was bent at 90 degrees and connected with the pommel. At the other side, the cross-guard was ended with an opening for a tassel. Interestingly, prior to its use in the army6, the sabre was subjected to various tests. One of them was cutting a steel bar without doing damage to the blade. According to experts, the 1934 sabre was characterized by excellent tactical and technical values. It became one of the symbols of the September Campaign of 1939.
