Description
A Polish sabre (szabla) is an Eastern European long one-edged melee weapon. It started to be used in Poland in the 15th century thanks to relations with Lithuania, Hungary and war contacts with Turkey, where sabres were very popular. A sabre consists of a blade and a hilt made of a grip and cross-guard quillions. A hilt may be open or closed with a hand guard. A one-edged bladed ended with a two-edged yelmen is responsible for the sabre's attack force. The cut is inflicted with a sharp edge of the blade. Due to Polish tradition and history, a sabre constitutes a particular symbol, which makes it a highly esteemed weapon. This miniature makes a perfect letter opener.
The Hungarian-Polish sabre is the oldest sabre design on the Polish lands. Batorówka
is one of its types. Its appearance is connected with the Prince of Transylvania - Stefan Batory, who was elected King of Poland in 1576 and ruled until his death in 1586. This weapon belonged to Polish cavalry and infantry. It was effective in inflicting strong thrusts, but less effective in fencing. It had an open hilt with curved grip covered with leather and a long cross-guard. A wide and heavy blade with slight curvature was frequently ended with a double edged yelmen. The hilt's shape suggest medieval swords. Apart from the construction of the hilt, Batorówka may be distinguished from other Hungarian-Polish sabres by its blade ornamentation. It was frequently adorned with the inscription "Stephanus Batoreus Rex Poloniae". This military weapon had a great influence on the creators of future models of Polish sabres.
