The Vistula River has always been in Poland, and Poland has always been known as "the land on the Vistula." Did, however, the symbolic role of the Vistula always go hand in hand with its actual role as the centre of the country's life?  On hearing such a question we immediately visualize barges laden with grain on their way to Gdansk, rafts and brave rafters.  On the other hand, we are struck by the image of towns on the Vistula, backs turned to the river.  This unclear part played by the Vistula in the life of the nation reflects the drama of the nation's history during the past few centuries.
For approximately one thousand years, towns and villages scattered along the Vistula River have been flourishing and declining.
