Theotokos of the Sign-This icon illustrates the prophecy of Isaiah, fulfilled in the glorious Nativity of our Lord: The Lord Himself shall give you a sign: Behold, a Virgin shall conceive and bear a Son... (Is a.7:14). In the catacombs of St. Agnes in Rome a 4th century prototype can be found. There is an early icon of this design that became known in 1170 when the ancient city of Novgorod in Russia was besieged by an alliance of enemies.
