Other than the standard nesting doll, two types of matryoshki have been produced for many years, though they are still quite unusual: nevalyashki and babushki. The nevalyashka is not technically a nesting doll. Most people refer to it as a bell. The root of the word is "valyat", which means "to roll". The prefix ne means "not". So a nevalyashka is a doll that does not roll over. This doll is rounded at the bottom and weighted, so that it pops back up if you try to knock it over. Since the Russian word is untranslatable and is difficult to pronounce, English speakers use a variety of terms to describe it: bell, musical, roly-poly, or even a "weebie". The second unusual type of doll is the babushka, or grandmother, which opens up to reveal three smaller non-nested dolls, their daughters, inside.
