Traditional folk chests were used to store the most precious objects in a peasant's house. Their owners used to keep the dowry, festive costumes, special festive candles, rosaries, family treasures, linen, money and documents. Some of the wealthier brides used to have their dowry stored in two chests.
Such painted chests made their owners particularly proud. The chests were placed opposite the entrance so that every visitor could spot them immediately. The ones which got older and became damaged through the years were later moved to the back of the house, in order to exhibit the newer ones
These beautiful smaller versions are highly detailed.  Keep in mind that now two are alike but all have a blue background.
