Description

The artistic work of Jozef Mehoffer (1869-1946) spans well over half a century, from his juvenilia made around 1890 under the supervision of Jan Matejko, to works completed during the Second World War.  His creative identity evolved considerably over this period.  His best works were accomplished at the turn of the century, in the period known as Mloda Polska ("Young Poland"), when Polish art attained an exuberance, vitality and richness it had never experienced before nor would reach again later.

Jozef Mehoffer worked in many of the genres of painting and drawing.  He designed murals and stained glass, and usually assisted in their making.  He left a substantial diary (1891-1897) and an abundant collection of correspondence.  He received numerous Polish and foreign awards.  This book outlines much of his work, and provides numerous examples of his charcoal sketches, oil paintings and stained glass window designs.  A real treasure and delightful read.
