This booklet tells the fascinating and moving story of the Polish forces in exile during the Second World War. In 1940 the remnants of the Polish Army arrived in Scotland. They helped to defend Scotland's eastern coast, and played a leading roll in the allied campaign in North-west Europe in 1944-45. In fighting for the allied cause they were continuing a much older struggle for the liberation of their own country, a struggle which proved tragically unsuccessful. With the communist domination of Poland at the end of the war, many Poles chose to remain in Scotland. Allan Carswell, curator in the Department of Armed Forces History, National Museums of Scotland, vividly relates how the Poles fared in exile, as soldiers and citizens. Illustrated with b/w an color photos.
