There is hardly any other nation which can display such a richness and variety of Christmas carols as can the Poles. Being for the most part traditional songs, handed down from the past centuries, it would be useless to try to trace their authors. And yet they comprise the purest poetry, more than often exquisite musical ideas, as well as many traces of old Polish customs. Adam Mickiewicz, who in his Paris lectures on the Slavonic literatures discussed also the carols, did not hesitate to describe those simple folk songs as "the nucleus of the national poetry". The folk writers of carol paid little heed to the considerations of climate or of historical truth. They did not bother that in Bethlehem there could be the snow of Polish winter or that the shepherds of the Nativity bore Polish names. But even in later carols, written by professional poets and musicians, the scenery has always remained closely linked with Polish customs. Hence Polish carols may be regarded as a very interesting section of Polish folklore.
