This papier-mache Santa was created in Germany by the Ino Schaller family. They're just like the ones their Great Grandfather made and sold in our country a century ago; ones that today fetch four figure prices at auctions. Each piece is hand cast in Great Grandfather Schaller's molds, and takes about five days to finish.
Some people mistakenly refer to German Santa containers as "Belsnickles." The term "Belsnickle" is in itself a corruption of the word "Pelze-Nichol" or fur-Nicholas. "Pelz-nichols" refer only to Santas that had real fur beards, and it was a term used only by some immigrants in the Mid-Atlantic States who had the misfortune to be misunderstood by their American neighbors. The truth is that neither "Belznickle," nor "Pelz-Nichol" is recognized today in Germany. The real German name is "St Nicholas" or "Weihnachtsmann." In English, simply, "Santa." |
