Twenty years ago Unkempt Thoughts, a collection of Polish aphorisms by Stanislaw Jerzy Lec was published in English and became an instant success. Clifton Fadiman called Lec: "one of the remarkable wits of our dark time, eminently attuned to it." A selection of his aphorisms opens this collection, which comprises 225 aphorisms by eighty Polish writers, many of them well known in their native land. A selection of thirty Polish proverbs is included representing some uniquely Polish expressions of universal wisdom.
